DUCK.
I'm trying to get slim for my Instagram photos, so I'm running outside at night listening to my favorite podcasts. Nobody is out at night walking the streets in the Southern California suburb area I'm in. I stop to take a break at a bus stop. I hear a little girl yell "Goose", which makes me pull off, just one earbud.
It's 10 PM, she's playing an outdated game like nobody gave her whatever 2026 thing they use because an IPad is 2018 thing. I'm looking at the wooden fence where I can't see whats going on behind there.
The fence looks like I'm seeing the Brady Bunch's fence from the other side. I could 'duck' if some threw a football over at me. (That was a Brady Bunch episode scene)
She next goes next in her little scary 1950's accent voice. Her voice isn't modern, but then again I'm not talking to children recently: "Duck...Duck...GOOSE!" She yells. Nobody is running behind the fence, no footsteps as I listen. I'm taking off my other earbuds now.
Sounds like a pre-recorded scene at a haunted house, where the animatronic character's don't move their mouths. Could be a scary cold opening to anything. Let just waste material on my shitty blog, its cool I'm just promoting stuff.
Brady talk, I did go to the Jack in the Box from the 90's Brady movie while in the area. I think that's what I wanted to talk about more. I was at the grand canyon and was told that the Brady bunch filmed an episode there. "Right over by the train station."
I like that the person telling me assumed I knew what that show was. I ended up watching that episode later on and Brady's don't go to the train station, or the youtube clip cut that out. The Brady kids sneak away from their camp at night to explore the grand canyon. They see a ghost Native America in 70's clothes standing in the field. I was like, this is an exciting episode. Turns out, just to be a Native American just living there in the area.
I worked a job which was next to a field and a Native American lived in the woods. I would hear tribal music out of his car as he chopped woods. Drum beats and chanting. He's not listening to any in 1900s.
For a while, my running joke with the staff was that he was a ghost because he wore fannel. Like a 90's native american Ghost just chopping trees in the woods. Years later, I went to the hospital near those woods. I told the receptionist about how I used to work near here and told him about the Native American living the woods. The receptionist told me they have had some ghost sightings....
You can ask me things in person, there's only so much to talk about. Let me just take this stranger who stumbled across this blog over to where I used to work dox-ing myself. Need to swing by the hospital to remember what he told me.
THE HILL PARTY.
Usually
on Friday nights, when I pulled my car into the Suburbs of the So-Cal
housing area, I would see a party up on the hill. This house across
from me with Orange Christmas type lights around the stone fence. You
can hear low talking and his Spotify playlist of Latino techno and trap music. I don't know who lived there but I always pictured them as a hairy chested and blue sunglasses type guy.
As a side hustle, I took upgrading
old Apple computers. Buy them used and upgrade them for turn a around
profit. Quickly found out people didn't believe I could put Seqouia OS on the older models. (I only sold them when I downgraded them)
I'm sitting at a the dining room table in my friends So-Cal house,
looking at why I don't have any buyers on all these selling apps. I'm watching the Apple logo flash on the Macbook screen as I get a sudden flood of noise. I hear Latino rap music start up from across the street. At same time, I hear a crowd of people talking.
Sound's
like that crowd, that came out of nowhere, all started talking at the
same time. Now, I've edited videos before. I know what a sound
effect of a crowd sounds like. If somebody
yells in live video of a crowd, their voice could get distorted. These people talking are all at the same level with no voice over powering the other.
I go stand on the porch and look across the street at that house on
the hill. I
think he's just playing a sound effect of a crowd from a PA system. The
sun is fading, but I can't see any shadows hitting the back of house
from that crowd of people walking around. I also don't a huge amount of parked cars. Maybe's he making them all park down by the Jack in the Box, (not the one from the Brady Bunch movie)
Now, nobody is else is outside. I forgot about Ring cameras as I run
across the street and I climb up that short hill. My face is level
with the stone wall fence. The orange Chirstmas lights blinking. I remember that little girl yelling 'goose; and even though it sounds like adults over that fence, that's not a police report I want to deal with.
"Can't let the Citizen's know, half these house's are empty. Play some party sound clips."
Or
"Guy selling used Macbooks is peaking over backyard fences"
TO STAY, MUST GET A JOB
I'm looking for jobs in California, and I see one job where I get to install parts on a guitar. I show up, and I've never heard of this brand of guitars before. They have a whole store of this brand of instruments hanging around the room. I think this company is like a knock off brand guitar company, but I'm here for money. I don't care if guitars are terrible if they're paying me.
The interview guy doesn't like that I play guitar. As soon I say it, he sighs. Crosses his legs and leans back annoyed. I don't know who we wants to work here. I think he's afraid if I'm any good, I'll go tour or come to work hungover from a gig. The later being more of what he thinks.
He also wasn't impressed I watched the youtube videos on how to install the guitar parts. Both the youtuber and the illegal immigrant working here, are probably both wearing Grateful Dead shirts, so who cares if I watched it on youtube.
A year later, I'm watching the Coachella fest on TV, just to see if anything is happening. Maybe somebody will get in a fight or set fire to the stage. I think they don't do it, because they want to get paid.
I'm watching a band preform and I'm looking at the guitarist in the band play. The guitar looks familiar and I recognize the brand. Its the one from the company that didn't hire me. I looked up the price, and the reason I didn't know the brand: because they sell guitars to people with money.
Another job I find, is they need some one to press graphics onto t-shirts. I think this will be a cool graphic design job with some fun hipster co-workers. Maybe the job site is in Santa Monica and I walk with the cute co-worker out to the beach when the shift ends
I show up to this building near the suburbs. Its not a bad area, so I go into the building. I'm on tour in this warehouse with fan's blowing so its heard to hear the tour guide is saying. Maybe something was filmed here. I'll never know.
There's cool hipster people, its all people past 30's, drenched in sweat pressing designs on t-shirts and folding them. Some of these workers I think have knife holsters. I assume for when this place gets raided. Saw one guy press a shirt with the Beatles logo on it, don't think the Beatles are getting a cut of that one t-shirt. Not for me, no beach nearby.
BE IN THE MOTION PICTURES!
I can't get a job, so I take a background extra filming gig.I have tried to act before, but my buddy Steve cut me out of all his movies.
This indie film needs adults for a small bar scene. I'm not getting paid to be there, but I get pizza at the end. Maybe I'll meet that cute hipster actress instead of the cute hipster graphic design t-shirt pressing lady.
If I'm paired with actress, I'm going to be running out of normal adult things talk to about after a few hours through filming. My last roommate also taught me: "you have to forget everything you know that's not adult talk once your at a certain age." My roommate's explains to me after my response that he plays Magic The Gathering.
He didn't like when I told him I walked into this comic shop on one Friday night, card deck in hand to win some money as a side hustle. In the shop and see the card tables, everybody is in their 20's like me. This wasn't even a money match, but you have to do the smaller rounds before you get to them.
I say to the comic clerk, "here for the Yugioh tournament". The clerk laughs. "Sign up here and head into that room in the back." The door open with shadows moving. There's a fan blowing at the door, can't imagine the smell in there.
I walk into this backroom, it's all high schoolers and one 50 year old guy. Maybe the local police officer undercover checking the guys coming to the Yugioh tournaments. "Yeah, your here for the prize money...."
I lose the entire tournament in 15 minutes and scurry past the magic players to my car looking down at the floor. Time for a new hair cut.
Its the day of the filming for the background extra role and I need to go to LA near an obscure run down street. They're still only paying me in Pizza, so I'm losing money to drive there. I could get a better deal by just going to get a pizza.
I'm microwaving my breakfast sandwich and its taking too long to heat up. Just watching it rotate through the glass window. My GPS says i'm going to be 20 minutes late to the shoot. I didn't want to be the late guy at the filming, because then for the rest of the day I'm the unprofessional late guy for my first big filming. "Hey late guy, that's the prop pizza for the actual actors who are all vegan."
Here, you can read some of the script I kept of that indie film...
CUPID PIZZA BAR - ENT - 7 PM-ISH
Direction note: Don't film the people outside standing by coin-operated washing machine business. They are outside because the wi-fi is better. Not actors. Well, not actors in our movie.
ENZO walks into the only bar in this small college town. He's wearing a polo shirt and slim tight jeans. Camera ignores the Walmart across the street and moves fast to capture the customers on their phones next door at the coin-operated washing business.
A hot college aged female employee is putting a new keg behind the bar. This bar uses big frat party style kegs.
Casting NOTE: (Actress must have muscles to lift kegs, if we don't get one with muscles, dump out alcohol from the keg. Actually, just have the PA empty it.)
The cupid bar logo with an arrow shot through through the pizza is on her employee t-shirt.
Producer NOTE: Get a sponsor to put a logo the back of the employees shirts. Ask Walmart. The Coin washing store said no. Also, check if Cupid pizza is a real brand, didn't google it first.
The local college Basketball team is sitting in the booths by lounge area of the bar drinking. One is dribbling a ball that is a little too loud.
(DO NOT LET EXTRAS NEAR THEM)
NOTE: Last filming, a fight broke out with them and the extra's. Which is why this scene is the re-shoot.
Extras can lean on the wall and objects in the room if they do it in a cool way. Give one Extra a lighter so he can flip it open occasionally. No vape pens, landlord said no.
